Bridgwater Member of Parliament Ashley Fox welcomed over 30 local businesses to his Business Breakfast Club event, featuring guest speaker Dr. Rachel Burden, Somerset Flood & Coastal Risk Manager at the Environment Agency.
Dr. Burden provided an update on the £240m Bridgwater Tidal Barrier (BTB) project, a key infrastructure initiative that will provide long-term flood protection for Bridgwater and the surrounding areas. Once completed, the barrier will safeguard over 11,300 homes built prior to 2012, as well as all new homes constructed since then. It will also protect around 1,500 local businesses and essential infrastructure, including schools, the hospital, and strategic transport links.
Speaking about the importance of the project, Ashley Fox said, "The Bridgwater Tidal Barrier is a vital piece of infrastructure that will protect both homes and businesses, providing peace of mind for many in our community. It ensures that Bridgwater can continue to grow and prosper without the constant threat of flooding."
During the event, Ashley Fox also took the opportunity to address wider concerns from local business leaders, particularly around the upcoming government budget. "It’s crucial that we continue to support our local economy," Ashley said. "While we don’t yet know what the budget will bring, there are concerns about potential new financial pressures on businesses. It’s vital that businesses, large and small, have the chance to thrive, and any additional burdens could seriously impact growth and opportunity here in the Bridgwater Constituency."
The Business Club series will continue, providing a platform for local businesses to engage with Ashley Fox MP and other key figures in the region.
