The Conservative Party has secured two major victories in local by-elections, winning seats from both Labour and the Liberal Democrats in Bridgwater and Burnham.
In Bridgwater's Fairfax East ward, Carole Edmunds won by a thumping margin, securing almost 60% of the vote, (289 votes). Labour suffered a historic defeat, coming in last place with just 12% of the vote (61 votes).
Meanwhile, in Burnham Central, Paul Mills defeated the Liberal Democrats with 262 votes to 201, the third seat the Liberal Democrats have lost on Burnham & Highbridge Town Council since 2022.
Bridgwater & Burnham MP Ashley Fox said:
"I am delighted that Carole and Paul have been elected, strengthening the Conservative team on both Bridgwater and Burnham & Highbridge Town Councils. This result is a testament to the hard work that Conservative councillors are doing on the ground. I will continue to work alongside them to ensure that we are representing the good people of the Bridgwater & Burnham to the best of our ability."
Diogo Rodrigues, Chairman of the Bridgwater Conservative Association, said:
"Labour is falling further behind in Bridgwater, and the Liberal Democrats continue to lose their grip in Burnham. These results show that people are putting their trust in their hard-working local Conservatives, along with their dedicated MP, Ashley Fox. We have a strong Conservative team standing up for hardworking people, families, and pensioners across the Bridgwater constituency."
