I have been in regular contact with traders in Eastover since the roadworks commenced and have heard directly from many about the significant challenges they face. While efforts to regenerate the town are welcome and could bring long-term benefits, the way this project has been handled has not been welcomed.
I have already written to the Council to express my concerns, reflecting the frustrations of traders who feel that consultation had been inadequate. The Council seems determined to press ahead with their plans without genuinely listening to or addressing the concerns traders raise. I have made it clear that consultation should involve meaningful dialogue, not simply talking at people.
In particular, the decision to shift from partial to full road closures with little notice has created real disruption. I have heard from businesses that footfall has dropped, and there are growing fears about the long-term impact on trade.
Having received further representations from businesses about the apparent lack of activity on-site at times, I am now writing again to both the council and the contractors to urge them to complete these works as quickly as possible. Any delay risks compounding the economic harm already being felt.
Eastover remains open for business, and I encourage everyone to support the local shops and traders along the street.
